To die or not to die
TO DIE OR NOT TO DIE
Theresa Marie Schiavo (December 3, 1963–March 31, 2005), was an American woman who spent the last 15 years of her life in a persistent vegetative state (PVS). The judicial and legislative battles to disconnect her feeding tube generated tremendous media coverage during the last two weeks of her life and prompted a fierce debate over bioethics, legal guardianship, federalism, euthanasia and civil rights.
On February 25, 1990, Terri Schiavo suffered severe brain damage from cerebral hypoxia caused by cardiac arrest. On February 11, 2000, a Florida court ruled that Terri was in a PVS, and authorized her husband and Guardian, Michael Schiavo, to discontinue artificial life support. Michael Schiavo contended that he carried out his wife's wishes not to be kept alive in a PVS. Terri's parents, Her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, and her brother and sister, disputed Michael's contention that she would not have wished to be kept alive and claimed that Terri was not in a PVS.
On the morning of February 25, 1990, at about 5:30 a.m. EST, Terri collapsed in the hallway of her apartment. The noise awoke Michael Schiavo and he immediately called Terri's parents and 911 emergency services. The cause of the collapse was determined to be cardiac arrest. While waiting for the paramedics to arrive she experienced a loss of oxygen to the brain. Firefighters and paramedics found Terri face down and unconscious, in the hallway outside her bathroom. There were no signs of violence or a struggle. Attempts were made to resuscitate Terri, but she remained unconscious and slipped into a coma. She was taken to a hospital, and in order to keep her alive, she was intubated, ventilated, and given a tracheotomy; she also received a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), a feeding tube inserted through the abdominal wall. Terri emerged from her coma two and a half months later. The upper brain was about 80 percent destroyed, and there was also damage to the lower brain. The only part of the brain that remained intact was the brain stem, which controls involuntary functions such as breathing and heartbeat—allowing Terri to survive (with a feeding tube) even though she no longer had any cognitive function.
Terri's parents claim that their daughter did not meet the definition of a persistent vegetative state and was in a "minimally conscious state" instead. Her parents argue that at times her actions were indicative of responses to external stimuli, not reflex or instinctive behavior. For example, the Schindlers claim that their daughter smiled, laughed, cried, moved, made childlike attempts at speech, and attempted to say "Mom" or "Dad"; or "yeah" when they asked her a question. They claim that when they kissed her she looked at them and sometimes puckered her lips.
From 1990 to 1993, Michael and the Schindlers enjoyed an amicable relationship. On June 18, 1990, the court appointed Michael Schiavo as Terri's legal guardian, without objection from the Schindlers.
On Valentine's Day of 1993, Michael Schiavo and the Schindlers had a falling-out. Michael claims the argument arose because he refused to share the settlement money with the Schindlers. The Schindlers claim that Michael failed to honor commitments he had previously made to seek aggressive treatments for his wife's condition.
The amicable relationship ended, and Michael and the Schindlers literally stopped speaking to each other. In July 1993, the Schindlers began their first challenge to Michael Schiavo's guardianship and attempted to remove him as legal guardian.
Michael Schiavo has been criticized by the Schindlers and their supporters for entering into a relationship with another woman, Jodi Centonze, while still legally married to Terri. Michael and Jodi Centonze have had two children together. Michael denies wrongdoing in this matter, stating that the Schindlers actively encouraged him to "get on with his life" and date since 1991. Michael said he chose not to divorce Terri and relinquish guardianship because he wanted to carry out her final wishes not to be kept alive in a persistent vegetative state.
Her parents claimed that Terri was a devout Roman Catholic who did not wish to violate the Church's teachings on euthanasia by intentionally starving or dehydrating herself to death, and that she had never expressed such a desire to anyone in her birth family or circle of friends. The Schindlers' legal fight was funded by a variety of sources on the political right.
Forty-seven protesters, including many children, were arrested outside the hospice where Terri was located. Most of these were non-violent, staged arrests for trespassing, made when protestors crossed a police line in a symbolic attempt to bring water to Terri.
Terri Schiavo died at 9:05 a.m. EST on Thursday, March 31. Terri's parents, who had been denied access to her during her last hours, traveled to the hospice to visit her when they were informed that she may be approaching death, arriving half an hour after her death. The Schindler family was allowed into the room after Michael Schiavo had left it. Terri's body was cremated following the autopsy and the husband did not allow Terri's family to participate in her burial ceremony.

What is bad ?
Why we think every action that we think,is true?why we think can realize bad and good?
Only and only God can say waht is bad and waht is good.
God dosen't let to any person that kill him/her self or other people.
God just know complete us because create us and other thing and is very great and ask for us every thing that is good.
If we don't know reason of every thing,it dosen't mean that it haven't reason.
When God forbid kill others in every situation,there for it is bad {even if we don't know reason of it}.We wath ask, wath don't ask bad thing have damage.
But about myself i must say that it isn't may that do this like action.
Even this thought make me very sad.
I think we haven't right that do it because is forbid in Islams and is self defeating with moral sense and it can make for afew people who are her/his fmily and ect.
Indisputable my first reasone is enough for me.
One month dosen't become that daughter of our nighber went in coma in during of about one week and with all trying of her parent,she died.
In during of that week her parent ask help from every one until only their child stay live but she die and with her death come one very big pain in heart of her parent.this pain don't replace with any thing.
cry of her mother was painful for me.
death with every reasone is very painful for family and any doctor haven't right make pain for people.
I think one doctor must help until pain of people became little,NO increase it.
I ask from every medical student that study my text.

This situation is very horrible But I think choosing death for a patient is not authorized. Because only God has the Ability to die people or give them life. I think every patient with any disease has the chance of living . As AM64 said and all of us know in Islam killing each other is forbidden. It is true that this kind of patients have a lot of pain , but we can try to reduce their pain instead of killing them. Having the right to choose death is an unusaul right , because I think at last all we can do is hope for the best.

if he experienced this coma and disease one thousand years ago what was its result? surely she wasn't able to survive, then I think there is no problem in his death, and if we want we can help her but there is no problem with her death, I don't say we should let all the patients to die, I say in any condition we can help for a limited time and limited effort. and these many years was enough I think, why we want her to come back to life? I think it is not because of the respect to life I think it is because of the fear of death, and fear of death is just for who they haven't realy lived in their life, and if they lived just for a moment then they can love death and death is not for them really, but if not then they they don't know the art of living and if we help her to come back to life can she live realy? with some side effects of her coma?
I don't say that we should not help her, the abstract of my concept is we have a lots of more problem to solve and this is not an important one, we have forgot non-death persons we should at first help them to become alive then help semi-dead persons to become non-death people. there is no profit in making semi-dead woman into non-death-hood, and leave her beside others to just breathe with no vibration of joy in her eyes.

I think when a person is in coma for a long time even the doctors don't have any hope on him or her we don't have been let to kill him or her because I believe that god should decide about our life and god has wanted that person live in this condition and we shoulden't intrduce.Sometimes we all have seen,I think,that there are some patients in coma and there are some other patient too that need some limbs which are very important for them and can survive them,in these situations I think with the parent's allowance of the person who is coma we can help others and I believe that this is very moral and want a very big sprit and everyone can't do that.
However I think that when there are some other ways to survive them we shoulden't kill others.
I think when we accept that god decide about our life we shoulden't let ourselves that intreduce in his will.

We believe that all of us will be die . But if we think that we will die then any event that can be happen let's to happen it's absolutley a wrong choose. we must have rights to choose the way of our life and try to have the best life that we can. There is way of cure for each disease we shouldn't be hopeless and we must try to cure that disease.Some times the men think that it is wished by GOD and we are forced to accept it that's true but GOD said that (I placed for you to choose and to try to discover new things and I don't deduct for you force) and it show us we couldn't couse to some body be died just for our wrong believings.Doctors have to be hopefule that couse to the patient be hopeful and it couse to that patient would be cured.

It is my question most of the time Iasked myself,What can we do about the paitent who doesn't have a real life? some years ago I wrote a text about a hospital (in USA,I think)that the doctors are allowedto kill their paitents if they think countinuing the life is so hard for the paitents or family of paitents.I think sometimes they're right and sometimes aren't.

I think this matter is very difficult .but for choosing the final way is simple because we have two way that every way is depend on chooser think.i think this decision depend on history of patient life if he/she think that life is like one game (the world has not end)(nihilism or lower) i can kill .but if she or he belive that life has end and in other world people can see harvest of doing we hav not right to kill.in other word if person before event that lead to die write abot theirself in this situation ican choose one way.( i cant write about this subject my comment tahat is pro with islam because in some situation i am not agree with islam)

One day every body borns and one day he (she) died but sometimes comfortabel and sometimes with kinds of dieases some of dieases destruct human by means of destructing soul and we are steak .
in my idia in this kind of dieases that human miss all of things if he(she) is important for parents without speaking or looking but satisfied of him is more important.
every work that human does is earning to fortunate and all of us know foortunate of that world is beautiful he(she) can save another people from death .
we must judje true abote dieases is all of us thank God for giving health to us . life is sea and human are ships in it i hope these ships by means of capitain of life(it means God) reach to fortunte seashore .

We dont know that when we die but all of us are sure thet finally we dieas good as that our die be honour.and this is the best whishes for people.
in my idia that if the parents of her dont be satisfied really they have be truth because she was their children thats why they are very upset and dont want miss her.
every work that human does for reach lucky and the best lucky is lucky of taht world this people although she(he) died and miss every things in the this world but she(he) can earn a great fourtnate
that world .
really i dont know why her husband want to die her perhaps for give her limbs for other people that needs them or perhaps he want to reid away all of stress familly that make for him .
if i was in her shoes really i love to give all of my limbs for people that needs them because in my idia worth of people is satified of God . it isnt important taht when we die it is important when we die we be satified .

we can look to the problem from two view:
first view is view of emotion.
when we look at the problem through
this view ,this act is unethical.even the patient was an animal it seems amoral.because life of every animates is respectable and we can not prevent of life of any being.even (s)he himself/herself allow to kill him/her it is not good jastification depend what our belief say as amoslems,I think.
second view is view of science.
when we look at the problem through this view,human is a piece of meat that if its input be more than its output its being is supplementary and nought of it is better because his/her being is knocker for others and scientists believe that his/her being and prospect is also painful for (s)he.
I can not choose one of these view because it need enough information
but I rather prefer first view.

maybe when you become sick , god wants YOU to die,but as you go to doctor ,you are trying to fight with his will? RIGHT ?
So medicine is a very bad science? why we should interfer in the god's will by medicine?
Till now almost 70 percent of the students should have been died from some diseases like ABELE,TAOON ,FALAJE ATFAL ,CELL ,VABA ,HASBE ,kozaz,...
though ,I do not undrestand why you people are waisting your time on studing medicine? YOU WANT TO INTERFER in the things which are absolutly NON OF YOUR BISSINUSS .By

We should free ourself from superficial thinking .we shold know every work of god has specific mean and philosophy .This sentence that all of people know its but little of them believe its because if in their life exist difficulties they are nagging from condition and are saying what we do that god bring this condition for us ,and therefore they are wanting to go out from that condition without any attention to gods speechs.

At first because of your wrting I think you are depressed and you should go to a psychologist.Then I think our work isn't against the GOd's will, because as the God said we have will too and we can choose our way and if God don't like something it won't happen although we try to avoid it(1).and Another important point is that that God also said that who wnat to suicide he is sinner so if we have a hard illness and there is a way to cure we should try it and plus to (1) it can be against the God's will so I can say say they shouldn't kill her till her existance isn't harmful to each other

to decide in such situations we must consider all the aspects,if she remained being alive ,and maybe never coming back,it was only suffering her,and waste of energy,but if we keep he alive,waiting for a miracle,it will worth it.we can not delay death,it's the last point of our lives,no doubt surely,but the authorization shouldn't have been given to her husband completely.the parents also had right to choose the fate of their dauther.her husband has a stone heart to act to her family like that,totally I don't think killing her could be a good idea,they should have keep her alive and asking GOD to save her.till the GOD end her life.

have you ever think about opposite type of this situation.I mean if her parents accepted her death and her husband didnt accept her daeth what we would say
perhaps some of us said her husband should choose her death or life and this is because we are sensetive and didnt want to accept the death of somebody or we think the person who didnt want the death of another person has a right to choose.
perhaps someothers said her parents should have the right of choice because they bring her up and they really try for her .
but this case is a little diffirent.because her husband want to start a new life and he plan for his life and death of her wife would help him to do his plans.
so there should be laws that according conditions select the person who can choose .the laws shouldnt be so tight.they should be flexible and can change in some situation that is diffirent just like this

perhaps some of us said her husband should choose her death or life and this is because we are sensetive and didnt want to accept the death of somebody or we think the person who didnt want the death of another person has a right to choose.
perhaps someothers said her parents should have the right of choice because they bring her up and they really try for her .
but this case is a little diffirent.because her husband want to start a new life and he plan for his life and death of her wife would help him to do his plans.
so there should be laws that according conditions select the person who can choose .the laws shouldnt be so tight.they should be flexible and can change in some situation that is diffirent just like this

its a very very very bad thing that i have ever listend.
i think that nobody can comment about our life or death.
i didnt think that a husband could be so cruel that command to kill his wife.
we have many people that after thirty years they be in comma and then they come back to their life.

As a new participant, I think there shouldn't be any right for people to decide life and death for the others, even if one's parents, spouse or children.
For the person him/herself, in Islam it's not allowed to decide to die (of course the matter of Sacrificing is something els). in situation like coma ,doctors try to cure the people,if they can't it means that God doesn't want.but it doesn't mean that because we can, kill instead of cure.surely God can kill that person & it doesn't have any reason that makes people to do that work.in that time we must change our thought.as i said in my comment these difficulties exist for many reasons.

When I was asked this question first ;It really was hard for me decide ;Now you imagine how hard it was for her family to decide.
Making a logical decision in such situation is so hard;but It hink her husbent made the right descision.
Last year my aunt had a brain apoplexy and was in coma for 8 days .
You can't imagine how hard it was ;eight days going to hospital and seeing her in such situation and waiting for amiracle to keep her back alive ,and seeing her dauter's cries...
The doctors were sure that she wouldn't come back &there were no hope.

I think you say this because you are not a doctor.
Iwant to say that there are some situations in which a doctor is sure that her patient will die and not trying to keep him alive wouldn't be considered as killing him.
Waiting for a miracle in such situation just seems likewaiste of time and money.

I read this story.at first I think doctor himself killed her but when I researched understood that she herself asked her husband If she slipped in to a coma doctors can killed her and when this happening happened doctors was not authorized to kill her,so they arranged court and let judges decide a bout this case.this court was showed in a big tv in time square(senteral and main square of newyork)at the same time and all of people could saw that.because this case was important for all of people too and they wanted to knew how they solve this problem.judges final decide was doctors can kill her.they think in this way she can be comfortable.
IF I BE IN THIS SITUATION I DONT KNOW WHAT MUST BE I DO.
I can't catch her life.I think GOD create people and only GOD can and must catch our life but even if her life continued because of her upper brain was about 80 percent destroyed and there was also damage to the lower brain she had'nt realy life,actualy she had artifical life.whitout abilitis,without activitis and I think without happiness,so I prefer her death but I never myself killed her and prefer some one else do this.In medicine and logically her life was useles and keep her alive was not helpful.but that woman have time for being alive so I realy don't know what is true and right.our religion don't let us to kill a person even in this situation.we have many case like this during or after our war against Iraq.we have many chemical person because of chemical bomb that they slipped in to coma for many years but we did'nt killed them because our religion did'nt and do'nt let us and we beleve that only god can catch theyr life.

i agree with you because if we pay attention we will realize that she died.in fact god select her death and her parents and husbands choice didnt related to her death our life (Isomebody died when his/her nerve system died)and their choice related to her being among them

I think it is a good idea to kill someone who suffer from an awful illness.But on the other hand islam don't agree with that.Because maybe the miracle happen and the patient become better or a new method discoverd to improve the illness.I think the pain is from god and of course the curness is from god eather,and if some one have an illness he or she shouldn't be hopeless,I think someone who has a deadful illness and knows that he or she will death ,it is atime given to them to be better and apologize from god and other people.
But I think mother and father grown up their girl and I think it is not logice that it gave to the husbend.

I read this comment the very first day and I've been thinking but the more i think the more stupid this seems.Killing a person because he's in too much pain ??and "what's the use in being paralyzed and still alive???" I mean do we have a good reason for us living as healthy creatures,now let's solve the problem with sick ones!I mean I totally disagree with any kind of suicide,especially "ASSISTED"!what does it mean to do it "ASSISTEDly"?anything other than "I'm coward,so plz mr.dr,you do this for me!" cos its still suicide!someone who himself commits suicide at least has got the guts to do it and face the consequences(i believe there are some :D)!

I think It's realy true but I think If one persen have difficulties its not exam only for him or her It's exam for all af the humans that knowing him or her Its exam for all of us.If we can help him or her we must do It .If they can help him or her and dont help we give a bad mark in this exam.

I think we can do many things but before allof works we should thought about their results and reflects .when your responsibility increase absoultly you should pay more attention to your works.

This is too hard but i think it was too hard for others to see her in this situation.but because of our belives we couldn`t choose death for anyone.and God should choose.
